About

Hello, I'm Kirstie,

Black Sheep Therapy is the culmination of over 20 years of professional experience and a lifetime of personal experience navigating the realities of family life, difference, and mental health.

I am an Occupational Therapist, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Specialist, Mad Studies scholar, and, most importantly, a mother of five. Throughout my career, I have worked across pediatrics, neonatal and infant mental health, CAMHS, independent practice, and international services in the UK, USA, and Africa. Alongside this professional experience, my own family has provided me with some of my greatest learning.

Why Black Sheep Therapy

My Hope

Black Sheep Therapy was born out of necessity.

Like many families, I found myself facing systems that didn't always provide the support, understanding, or flexibility that children and families needed. As both a professional and a parent, I knew there had to be another way.

After spending over two decades developing my skills and experience, I realised that I wanted to create the kind of service I would have wanted for my own family: one that values individuality, recognises the complexity of people's lives, and supports children, young people, and families to build the life they want to live.

The name Black Sheep Therapy reflects a belief that has shaped both my professional practice and personal life: not everyone fits comfortably within the flock, and they shouldn't have to. Difference is not something to be fixed or hidden. It is something to be understood, supported, and respected.

My Approach

I work with children, young people, parents, and families from pregnancy through to young adulthood, offering support that is holistic, evidence-based, and tailored to the individual.

I believe that every child and young person, regardless of their age, diagnosis, experiences, or challenges, deserves the opportunity to live the fullest life possible. My role is not to change who someone is, but to help them, and the people around them, develop the understanding, skills, confidence, and support needed to achieve the goals that matter most to them.

Rather than relying on a single therapeutic model, I draw upon a range of evidence-based, neurodivergent-affirming, trauma-informed, and creative approaches to ensure that support is meaningful, practical, and personalised.

The Most Important Lessons

As a mother of five children with a wonderfully varied range of experiences, including neurodivergence, mobility difficulties, complex medical experiences, and mental health challenges, I have gained a unique understanding of the realities that many families face every day.

My children continue to be my greatest teachers. They have challenged me to learn more, think differently, advocate harder, and continually develop my practice. They have shown me that people thrive not when they are taught to fit into the world around them, but when they are supported to participate in it as themselves.

The Goal

My ultimate aim as a therapist is to become unnecessary.

Successful therapy is not about creating dependence. It is about helping children, young people, and families develop the skills, confidence, understanding, and resources they need to continue their journey independently.

If I can help someone feel understood, empowered, and able to build the life they want to live, then I believe I have put my skills to good use.
